Television Actress Kavita Chaudhary Passes Away at 67

Television actress Kavita Chaudhary, renowned for her portrayal of an IPS officer in Doordarshan’s Udaan, passed away on Thursday (February 15) following a heart attack. According to a report in Amar Ujala, Kavita passed away in Amritsar, and her final rites were conducted on Friday morning.

Kavita rose to prominence through her roles in various Doordarshan TV shows during the 1980s and 1990s. Notable among these were Your Honour, Apradhi Kaun!, and IPS Diaries. She was also known as the younger sister of police officer Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, the second woman to join the Indian Police Service (IPS). Reportedly, Kavita conceptualized Udaan based on her sister’s life, and the show aired from 1989 to 1991, experiencing a resurgence in viewership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to her television career, Kavita is remembered for her portrayal of Lalitaji in the popular Surf commercials. An article in Indian Express mentioned that Kavita was a contemporary of actors Anang Desai, Satish Kaushik, Anupam Kher, and Govind Namdev at the National School of Drama.

Anang Desai shared with the news portal that Kavita had battled cancer a few years ago, choosing to keep it private. He revealed, “I spoke to her about fifteen days ago when she was in Mumbai, she was not keeping too well. Kavita’s nephew informed me about her death this morning.”
