Tamil Nadu Congress MLA Vijayadharani, who represents the Vilavancode Assembly constituency, made headlines by joining the BJP in Delhi on Saturday. This three-time legislator’s move marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. Notably, Vijayadharani comes from a distinguished lineage, being the great-granddaughter of social reformer Kavimani Desigavinayagam Pillai.
According to ANI reports, Vijayadharani’s transition to the BJP took place in the presence of Union Minister of State L Murugan, underlining the party’s growing influence in the state. In her statement to reporters following her party switch, she emphasized the importance of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership for the nation, indicating her alignment with the BJP’s ideology and vision.
Prior to officially joining the BJP, Vijayadharani submitted her resignation from the Congress, citing personal reasons in a letter addressed to the party’s chief. This move reflects her decision to part ways with her former political affiliation and embrace a new path within the BJP fold.
Amid speculation surrounding her potential shift to the BJP, Vijayadharani clarified to The Hindu that her presence in Delhi was related to a legal case she was pursuing before the Supreme Court, hinting at the underlying factors leading to her decision.
Vijayadharani’s political journey has been marked by notable achievements and roles within the Congress party. Having served as the former President of Tamil Nadu Mahila Congress and later as the General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress, she has wielded influence at both state and national levels. Her successive re-elections to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, including in 2021, underscore her popularity and significance within the political landscape of the region. Additionally, her tenure as the Chief Whip of the Congress in the Assembly and her active involvement in various committees further highlight her seasoned leadership and political acumen.
