UGC Allows Four-Year Graduates Direct Entry to PhD and NET

According to Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), individuals holding four-year undergraduate degrees now have the opportunity to directly pursue a PhD and participate in the National Eligibility Test (NET). Previously, NET candidates were required to possess a master’s degree with a minimum of 55 percent marks. Candidates aspiring for a PhD, with or without a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), must now attain a minimum of 75 percent marks or equivalent grades in their four-year undergraduate program.

Kumar stated that candidates with four-year undergraduate degrees can pursue a PhD and take the NET exam. These candidates are permitted to appear in their desired subject for a PhD, regardless of the discipline of their four-year bachelor’s degree. Additionally, candidates who have completed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor’s degree program must achieve a minimum of 75 percent marks in aggregate or equivalent grades. Kumar also mentioned that a relaxation of five percent marks or its equivalent grade may be granted for candidates belonging to specific categories, such as SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently-abled individuals, economically weaker sections, and other designated categories, in accordance with UGC decisions.
