The United States and Taiwan are actively exploring ways to enhance Taiwan’s role in international forums such as the UN, addressing global challenges like public health, aviation safety, and climate change. This comes in the wake of China opposing Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN climate talks. During recent talks, both nations stressed the significance of collaborating with like-minded partners to counter attempts to isolate Taiwan internationally. Despite objections from China, the US maintains its distinct “One China” policy, governed by the Taiwan Relations Act and other diplomatic agreements.
In addition, discussions during the US-Taiwan consultation covered the importance of Taiwan’s participation in global organizations like the World Health Assembly (WHA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). China has previously blocked Taiwan’s representation in these bodies, especially after Taiwan elected a president with a skeptical stance toward China. The ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to overcome these obstacles and ensure Taiwan’s meaningful involvement in various multilateral organizations.
