Virat Kohli Makes History with 12500 T20 Runs

During the IPL 2024 match against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli cemented his legacy and reached a significant milestone. Opening the innings for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Virat made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to amass 12500 runs in T20 cricket. With just six runs shy of the milestone, Virat achieved it in style with a powerful strike off Mohit Sharma’s delivery in the second over of the chase.

Having already established himself as the sole Indian batsman with 12000 runs in T20s, Virat now boasts 12500* runs in 387 matches. His impressive stats include an average of over 41 and a strike rate exceeding 130, accompanied by 9 centuries and 95 half-centuries. Virat commenced his T20 journey with Delhi in 2007 before joining RCB prior to IPL 2008, where he has remained since. Beyond being India’s highest run-scorer in T20s, Virat also holds the record for the most runs in the IPL, making him the only player in the league’s history to surpass the 7000-run mark.

Atop the list of batsmen with the most T20 runs stands Chris Gayle, with 14562 runs in 463 matches, though he has been absent from IPL since 2021. Following Gayle is Shoaib Malik, with 13360 runs in 542 matches, while Kieron Pollard occupies the third spot with 12900 runs, having retired from IPL but still active in other leagues. Among Indian players, Virat leads the pack, trailed by Rohit Sharma with 11482 runs in 424 T20s, and Shikhar Dhawan with 9797 runs in 334 T20s, who captains Punjab Kings in the IPL.

Additionally, Virat Kohli reclaimed the Orange Cap, overtaking Ruturaj Gaikwad, who had recently surpassed him in runs. Ruturaj, representing CSK, currently holds 509 runs in the league. However, during the match against Gujarat Titans, Virat surpassed Ruturaj’s tally. The battle for the Orange Cap is expected to intensify as Ruturaj faces off against Punjab Kings, with Sai Sudharsan and Riyan Parag following closely behind in the run-scoring charts. KL Rahul, with 406 runs in 10 matches, rounds out the top five.
