West Bengal Minister Faces Student Protests at Medical Colleges

Protests have intensified at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where students are demonstrating against West Bengal Minister Javed Ahmed Khan and TMC MLA Swaran Kamal Saha. The unrest follows recent developments at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where Principal Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, who resigned yesterday, has been reappointed to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

The ongoing strike at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, now in its fifth day, has led to a complete closure of OPD services. Junior doctors and students are maintaining their strike, demanding that their concerns be addressed. The strike, initiated by the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA), has significantly disrupted hospital services.

A statement from FORDA on Monday night revealed that despite extensive discussions with the Union Health Minister’s team, no concrete solution has been reached, prompting the continuation of the strike. In addition, women doctors across Kolkata and other districts in Bengal are planning a protest, titled “Freedom of Women on the Midnight of Independence,” starting at 11:55 pm on August 14.

Prominent personalities, including actresses Swastika Mukherjee and Churni Ganguly, along with filmmaker Pratim D Gupta, have urged public participation in the protest. The junior doctors have also set a deadline for Kolkata Police to complete their investigation into the murder of the female doctor, demanding a magisterial inquiry. They have insisted on a resolution by August 14, questioning the necessity of extending the deadline. The agitation reflects the medical community’s determination to seek justice and ensure safety within medical institutions.
