November 14th is the ‘World Diabetes Day’. The main objective of this day is to create awareness about diabetes through health camps, health messages, meetings and various events.
Diabetes has become an epidemic worldwide. It is also known as slow poison (silent killer). Sitting in front of the computer or mobile for hours, working till late night, waking up late in the day, not exercising, eating too much oil and spices are the cause many diseases. Diabetes is the most common disease among them. Not only adults, even young children are affected by this diabetes these days.
Today is the birth anniversary of Sir Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin. Banting was the first scientist to apply insulin to the human body. Insulin plays a major role in regulating blood sugar levels in the body. However, in 1991, the International Diabetes Association and the World Health Organization started celebrating this day as World Diabetes Day. Diabetes occurs when the blood sugar level is above the normal range.
There are usually 2 types of diabetes. Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs in children, adolescents and young adults, mainly at the age of 25 years. In this case, the symptoms of the disease appear suddenly. Similarly, type 2 diabetes usually occurs after the age of 40. It is the most common type of diabetes. This usually occurs to them whose family and close relatives have a history of diabetes. Although diabetes is a hereditary disease, irregular lifestyle is the main cause of this disease. Due to the changing lifestyle, the number of diabetic patients is increasing day by day. According to the World Health Organization, 40 million people die from it every year.
Diabetes can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney, liver, eye and neurological problems. Regular consultation with a doctor and proper treatment helps in controlling diabetes. Similarly, diabetics need to take care of their health. They need to focus especially on their diet. A little carelessness and negligence towards food and drink is very harmful to their health. If diabetes is not controlled, it can lead to other serious diseases in the body. However, it can be kept under control by doing regular exercise, yoga, jogging, along with a balanced diet. This year the theme of the day is ‘Access to Diabetes Care.’
