Pavel Durov, CEO of the messaging app Telegram, was arrested at Le Bourget Airport in Paris on Sunday. He faces serious allegations including money manipulation, smuggling, corruption, and data leakage. An investigation into these charges is underway.
The French court has set Durov’s bail at 5 million euros (48 crore rupees). He is barred from leaving France until the investigation is complete and must report to the police station twice a week.
Durov, originally from Russia, holds multiple citizenships: Russian, French, United Arab Emirates, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. He has lived in France for several years and also holds French citizenship.
The arrest has caused tensions between France and Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that diplomatic relations between the two countries have worsened. A Kremlin spokesperson mentioned that while Russia is ready to support Durov, his French citizenship complicates the situation. In response, the United Arab Emirates has asked France to ensure Durov has access to all legal options.
The arrest relates to allegations that Durov facilitated criminal activities through Telegram. French authorities have not yet provided further details on the investigation.
