Diplomatic Strain: India Calls for Action Against Khalistani Extremism in Canada

At the Asian Summit in Laos, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not engage in discussions on significant issues. However, Trudeau addressed Canadian security during a press conference with Modi.

In that press conference, Trudeau highlighted the tension between the two countries after Canada accused India of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Niza in 2023. He mentioned, “We discussed the work the two countries need to do, but we can’t share details about those discussions. My focus remains on the safety of many Canadians, as it is the responsibility of any Canadian government.”

Meanwhile, Indian government sources countered Trudeau’s claims. They stated that although the two leaders met, they did not cover these topics. The sources highlighted that the Indian government focused on the security of Indians living in Canada. India called on the Canadian government to take action against anti-Indian Khalistani activities and demanded strict measures against those promoting violence, extremism, and terrorism on Canadian soil.

The Asian Summit runs from October 6 to 11 in Laos, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi represents India.
