High Court Upholds Life Sentence for Former Gunupur MLA Ramamulthi Gamang in Wife’s Murder Case

Former Gunupur MLA Ramamulthi Gamang faced a setback in his wife’s murder case as the High Court upheld the life sentence imposed by a lower court. Last year, Ramamulthi challenged the sentence from the special MP-MLA court in Bhubaneswar, but the High Court’s decision left him disappointed.

According to the complaint, Ramamulthi’s wife, Shasirekha, died under suspicious circumstances on August 29, 1995. Police discovered her charred body at their government residence in MLA Colony, Kharbehnagar.

On the day of the incident, Ramamulthi reported to the police that his wife had committed suicide. However, the investigation revealed that her death was not a suicide but a premeditated murder, with evidence implicating Gamang.

Based on this evidence, the police initially filed charges of manslaughter, later escalating the case to murder. In 2023, the special court in Bhubaneswar convicted Ramamulthi Gamang, relying on testimonies from 11 witnesses and 15 pieces of documentary evidence, sentencing him to life imprisonment. The High Court has now confirmed this verdict.
