Australia Bans Social Media for Children Under 16 to Protect Mental Health

The Australian government has banned children under 16 from using social media platforms. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese introduced the new law on Thursday, which prohibits children from accessing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X.Albanese said the law aims to protect children from the harmful effects of social media.

“Social media is harming our children, and it’s time to stop it,” Albanese declared during a press conference. He stated that Parliament would introduce the law this year and that authorities would fully implement it by the end of next year.

Once the law takes effect, children will no longer be able to use social media for activities like video sharing or messaging. Australia is also testing a new age verification system to ensure strict enforcement of the ban.

Albanese added that there will be no exceptions for minors, even if their parents give consent to use social media. He stressed that excessive social media use is endangering children’s physical and mental health.
