Bangladesh Lifts Restrictions on Ilishi Export to India Ahead of Durga Puja

Bangladesh has lifted the export restrictions on Ilishi fish, allowing for the shipment of 3,000 metric tons to India just in time for Durga Puja, a major festival for Hindu Bengalis. The decision comes as the government aims to meet the demand for this popular delicacy during the festive season.

Previously, the Bangladeshi government imposed export restrictions to maintain adequate supply for local consumers amid rising prices and limited availability in the market. With these restrictions now lifted, Ilishi fish will once again grace Bengali households.

During the monsoon season, many people in states like West Bengal look forward to enjoying Bangladeshi Ilishi. Traditionally, Bengalis pair Ilish with Khichidi during Durga Puja celebrations. Last year, India imported 4,000 tons of Ilishi from Bangladesh. In 2023, the Ministry approved 79 companies to export a total of 50 tons of Ilishi fish to India.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Bangladesh is responsible for producing about 70 percent of the world’s rice, showcasing its vital role in the agricultural landscape.
