Kolkata is currently experiencing widespread unrest following the tragic death of a trainee doctor, Abhya. Consequently, protests and demonstrations have erupted across the city, accompanied by vandalism and violence. In response to the escalating turmoil, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of politicizing the murder to incite further violence in the state.
Specifically, Mamata Banerjee openly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the BJP aims to leverage the murder case for political gain. Furthermore, she warned that if West Bengal descends into chaos, it would likely trigger unrest in other states, including Assam, the North East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi. Banerjee emphasized, “We will shake your chair,” highlighting the severe consequences she anticipates.
Moreover, her comments have sparked significant backlash from other state leaders. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi strongly condemned Banerjee’s remarks regarding Odisha. Majhi questioned Banerjee’s authority to make disparaging comments about Odisha, asserting, “Odisha is a peaceful state. The people here are responsible and aware. Her hateful and negative comments are insensitive and unacceptable.”
In addition, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh criticized Banerjee’s statements. Sarma challenged Banerjee, asking, “Who dares to threaten us?” Meanwhile, Singh demanded an apology, denouncing Banerjee’s remarks about the North-Eastern region as reprehensible. He stressed that politicians should refrain from inciting violence on public platforms.
Furthermore, BJP National Vice President and Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda condemned Banerjee’s comments. Panda reiterated that Odisha, known for its peace, would not tolerate such hate-driven rhetoric. He highlighted that such divisive thoughts have no place in society.
As a result, the escalating tensions and political rhetoric reflect the deepening crisis as Kolkata and its leaders navigate the fallout from the tragic incident.
