Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Anura Kumara Dishanaike has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his response to his greeting message. In addition, he emphasized the commitment to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s ex post, he said, “Thank you for your support and good wishes. I share your commitment to strengthen the relationship between our countries. We can work together for the betterment of the people and the region of both countries.”
However, after Dishanake was elected President of Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Modi congratulated him and said, “Sri Lanka is India’s strategic neighbor. India looks forward to working closely with the island nation. Multifaceted cooperation between the two countries will benefit Indian citizens and the people of the region as well.”
Anura Kumar Dishanaike is the first left-wing leader of Sri Lanka to become the President. He bagged the post by defeating Sajith Premadasa of the opposition party by a huge margin of votes. He will take oath as President today.
However, Dishanake is a leader of the Janata Vimukti Peramuna Party (JVP). He contested the presidential election as a candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) coalition.
In 2022, Sri Lanka’s then President Gotabaya Rajpaksa resigned amid severe financial crisis. This is the first presidential election in Sri Lanka since the financial crisis that hit the country. However, how Dishanake is handling the situation of the country must be monitored.
