The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan from Okhla following a five-hour interrogation. Authorities accuse Khan of violating government guidelines during his tenure as Chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board. The ED team reached Khan’s house at 7 a.m. today, but Khan kept them waiting outside for two hours before finally opening the door.
After letting the officers in, Khan argued with them before they proceeded with the interrogation. Later, Khan took to social media to condemn the ED’s actions, labeling them as politically motivated. He insisted that the charges were false and aimed at weakening the Aam Aadmi Party. “What crime have I committed by serving people honestly?” Khan asked in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The ED’s investigation centers on allegations that Khan made 32 illegal appointments while leading the Delhi Waqf Board. Reports indicate that five of these appointees were his relatives, while 22 came from Okhla, Khan’s constituency. Khan also faces accusations of illegally leasing several Waqf Board properties and misusing board funds.
The controversy erupted when the then-CEO of the Waqf Board issued a memorandum against these appointments. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), also investigating the case, backed these allegations. In September 2022, about a month after the CBI filed a chargesheet, the ACB interrogated Khan. Authorities then seized ₹24 lakh in cash and weapons from his residence. Although they arrested Khan, the court later granted him bail on December 28, 2022.
