Former AAP leader Kailash Gehlot officially joined the BJP today after resigning from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) yesterday. He made the switch at the BJP headquarters this morning, confirming rumours about his defection.
Gehlot, previously the Transport Minister in the Delhi government and a key ally of Arvind Kejriwal, cited unfulfilled promises and internal controversies as reasons for his departure. In his resignation letter, he acknowledged AAP’s failure to deliver on crucial promises, such as cleaning the Yamuna River.
“We promised to clean the Yamuna during the last election but failed. Constant conflicts between the Delhi government and the Centre stalled progress. With no other option left, I am resigning from AAP’s primary membership,” Gehlot wrote.
After joining the BJP, Gehlot reflected on his decision, stating, “This was not an easy step. I have been associated with AAP since Anna Hazare’s movement and have worked for Delhi as an MLA and Minister. Some may think this decision was made overnight or under stress, but I want to clarify that it was well-thought-out.”
He also addressed rumours, saying, “Some claim I acted out of fear of the CBI and ED. I want to assure them that since 2015, I have carried out my duties as an MLA and Minister with integrity, without succumbing to any pressure.”
