The Customs Department has achieved significant success at Mumbai Airport, arresting two passengers for smuggling gold valued at Rs 1.25 crore. The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) seized a total of 1.725 kg of gold, with the first passenger hiding the gold in his undergarments.
On October 15, the AIU tracked a passenger traveling from Dubai to Bangkok based on intelligence information. The passenger, accompanied by an airport employee, attempted to access the toilet when customs officials discovered the hidden gold. During interrogation, the passenger claimed another individual had handed over the gold to him.
Following this, the AIU initiated a thorough search operation at the airport, leading to the arrest of a second passenger linked to the smuggling ring. Officials revealed that the suspects had previously engaged in smuggling activities.
In a separate incident, the Customs Department also confiscated 455 grams of 24-carat gold powder from another passenger arriving from Dubai, valued at Rs 33 lakh. Additionally, expensive phones worth Rs 6 lakh were recovered, hidden in the passenger’s luggage and body.
Overall, the Customs Department has seized 1.725 kg of gold worth Rs 1.25 crore in these operations.
