India abstained from voting on the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution aimed at preventing illegal Israeli incursions into Palestine. Several other nations also abstained from the proposal, while many voted in favor.
On Wednesday, the 193-member United Nations adopted a resolution demanding Israel vacate the Palestinian territories it illegally occupies within a year. The resolution received 124 votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions, including India.
Major nations such as Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Ukraine, and the UK also refrained from voting. Israel and the United States strongly opposed the resolution.
The Palestinian delegation urged immediate action, stating, “The international community cannot ignore repeated violations of international law.”
The UN resolution condemned Israel’s actions, stating that such violations threaten regional and global peace.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, rejected the resolution, calling it a politically motivated attempt to undermine Israel’s legitimacy. The United States echoed concerns, saying the resolution would not contribute to peace but increase tensions.
