The case of the assault and murder of a Kolkata medical student is still making headlines. Nationwide protests continue, demanding justice for the victim. Abhay’s parents have accused the Kolkata Police of trying to cover up the case by offering them money.
The parents claim that Kolkata Police initially blocked their access to the body and delayed the post-mortem. When the body was eventually handed over, a senior police officer allegedly tried to bribe them to remain silent. The parents refused the money and reported being pressured to sign blank papers, which they tore up in protest.
The victim’s parents joined a “lights-out” protest led by junior doctors in Kolkata, seeking justice for their daughter. Protests have spread across West Bengal since August 10, with many demanding action. The Calcutta High Court has now transferred the investigation to the CBI. Police have arrested the main suspect, Sanjay Roy, and the former principal of RG Kar College.
