Violence is escalating once again in Manipur, with protestors setting massive fires and attacking the homes of several leaders. One community is targeting another, while extremists also focus on government officials. In the latest series of events, Chief Minister Biren Singh’s residence became a target. On Saturday evening, a group of extremists attempted to break into his house but were stopped by security guards. The guards used tear gas and fired shots to disperse the attackers, prompting them to retreat.
Subsequently, the Meitei civil rights group and the Coordinating Committee of Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the state government. Spokesperson Khuraizam Athoub demanded that the state and legislators take immediate, decisive action to address the escalating violence. He warned that failure to take prompt steps would result in public unrest. The ultimatum called for military action against all armed extremist groups operating in the region.
Manipur remains in turmoil after the bodies of six missing individuals were found in the Jiribam district, further intensifying the violence in the area. The government has imposed an indefinite curfew in five districts while suspending internet services across the state.
