Scrub typhus has raised alarms in Odisha, following malaria and dengue. The monsoon season has spiked cases in districts like Bargarh, Jagatsinghpur, and Mayurbhanj, with reports of multiple deaths.
After last year’s outbreak, a central team visited Odisha and found critical issues. They identified open defecation, sitting or sleeping on grass, and walking barefoot as major factors in the disease’s spread. The team recommended early testing, prompt treatment, and public awareness campaigns before the monsoon. They also highlighted the need to improve ICU facilities and refer critical cases promptly.
In 2023, scrub typhus re-emerged in Odisha, infecting over 3,000 people and causing 8 deaths. State Agriculture Secretary Arvind Padhi also contracted the disease. The public, unaware of scrub typhus, panicked as the illness spread, driven by insect bites. Despite government efforts to raise awareness about malaria and dengue, scrub typhus remains largely unaddressed.
A senior health department official confirmed three cases of scrub typhus this year and is investigating the reported deaths. Last year’s retesting of some cases yielded negative results, leading officials to order re-testing of scrub typhus samples. The department also discovered uncooperative private hospitals and diagnostic centers and plans to issue a formal notice. A health department team is already investigating the situation.
Authorities are focusing on early detection and improved medical care to control the spread of scrub typhus.
