Police on High Alert for Nabanna Protest Amid Alleged Conspiracy

Today students will march to the State Secretariat (Nabanna Abhiyaan) , protesting an incident of brutality by a junior female doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital. This protest is organized by the West Bengal Chhatra Samaj. In response, the state administration has implemented strict security measures.

On Tuesday, 4,500 to 5,000 policemen will be stationed in and around Nabanna. Twenty-one senior police officers, including IGs and DIGs, will oversee security. Additionally, 13 officers of SP and DSP ranks, along with an Additional Commissioner of Police and 15 Additional Superintendents of Police, will be on duty. Howrah Bridge in Kolkata is sealed, and no vehicles are allowed through.

To prevent protesters from climbing barricades, civic volunteers are greasing check gates behind Fort William in Hastings, Kolkata. The protest is linked to a rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh has alleged a major conspiracy behind the Nabanna campaign, accusing the BJP of inciting violence. He claims CPI(M) and Congress are also involved. Ghosh has released two videos alleging discussions about violent acts during the protest, though Dainik Jagran has not verified their authenticity.

Union Minister of State and Bengal BJP President Sukant Majumdar accused the Mamata government of trying to suppress the student movement. He warned that if any major incidents occur during the protest, the state government will be held accountable.

Additional Director General of Bengal Police Manoj Kumar Verma stated that the area around the state secretariat is a protected zone. No organizations have applied for permission to protest there. Intelligence reports suggest that some individuals might use the protest as a cover to incite unrest, potentially involving children and women. There are also concerns that the protest might disrupt the UGC NET exam scheduled for Tuesday. The police aim to ensure minimal inconvenience to the public.
