Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Thursday that the withdrawal of troops from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China in eastern Ladakh is nearly complete. He emphasized that ongoing discussions at both diplomatic and military levels are aimed at resolving conflicts between the two nations.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Bob Khating Museum in Tezpur, Assam, Singh stated, “In certain areas along the LAC, India and China are engaged in discussions to address conflicts. Recent talks have led to a broad consensus on restoring the status quo, based on principles of mutual respect and protection.”
Singh added that the agreement covers rights related to patrolling and grazing in traditional areas. He indicated that the withdrawal process is almost finished while acknowledging that further patience is needed for a complete resolution.
It’s noteworthy that India and China recently signed an agreement regarding patrolling arrangements along the LAC, following a prolonged standoff that began in 2020 due to Chinese military actions. This standoff significantly strained relations between the two countries.
The recent bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit marked a potential easing of tensions. This meeting was the first formal interaction between the two leaders in five years, and both acknowledged the importance of their relationship for the people of India and China, as well as for regional and global peace and stability.
Additionally, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong expressed hope for smooth progress in bilateral relations, emphasizing the need for cooperation despite specific disagreements. During the event, Defense Minister Singh paid tribute to the first Home Minister Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary. He remarked, “Many names have not received their due recognition in our history, but that does not diminish their sacrifices. We must remember and honour them.”
Singh unveiled a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Bob Khating Museum and praised India’s remarkable unity. He urged everyone to uphold this spirit of unity.
