Supreme Court Reviews Kejriwal’s Bail and Arrest Pleas

The Supreme Court began hearing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s pleas on Thursday. Kejriwal is seeking bail and challenging his arrest by the CBI in the alleged excise policy scam.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, argued before Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan that the CBI FIR did not name Kejriwal, and he posed no flight risk. Singhvi noted that the Supreme Court, in granting interim bail in a money laundering case, had previously determined that Kejriwal was not a threat to society.

Singhvi highlighted that the issues leading to Kejriwal’s arrest began in August 2023 and culminated in March of this year. Both the Supreme Court and a trial court have already granted him bail. On August 23, the Supreme Court allowed the CBI to file a counter-affidavit and gave Kejriwal two days to submit a rejoinder.

Kejriwal has filed two separate petitions challenging the denial of bail and his arrest by the CBI. He is contesting the August 5 order of the Delhi High Court that upheld his arrest.
