Modi guarantees Double-Engine Governance in Odisha

The BJP’s morale is soaring as it sets its sights on forming the government in Odisha post the 2024 elections. Key figures within the party are embarking on extensive visits to the state, engaging in public gatherings and dialogues with intellectuals, all aimed at bolstering a narrative conducive to winning a majority of seats and contributing to the saffron party’s ambitious ‘400 Par’ seat goal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently joined the fray, addressing a series of public meetings in Odisha to counter the ruling BJD’s strategy. Modi’s arrival in the state was met with grand receptions, and his first public address in Berhampur carried a resounding message, beginning with remarks in the local language, Odia.

During his speech, Modi emphasized the significance of the upcoming elections, framing them as dual yagyas (sacred rituals), one for a robust central government and the other for a BJP-led administration in Odisha, promising a “double-engine government” for the first time in the state. He highlighted the BJP’s vision outlined in its manifesto, pledging tangible outcomes if elected.

Modi also underscored the failures of the current regime, setting a symbolic “expiry date” for the ruling BJD and offering a vision for a transformed Odisha under BJP rule. He criticized the lack of development despite the state’s abundant resources, attributing it to the shortcomings of past administrations.

Moreover, Modi pointed out the Modi government’s substantial support for Odisha, contrasting it with previous regimes’ inadequacies. He criticized the BJD for alleged mismanagement of funds and failure to effectively implement central schemes, particularly in crucial sectors like healthcare.

Addressing concerns about healthcare and social security, Modi assured the audience of his government’s commitment to implementing flagship schemes and improving access to medical services, especially for the elderly and economically vulnerable.

The choice of Berhampur for Modi’s address was strategic, signaling the BJP’s intent to make inroads into South India and Odisha, with Ganjam district being a pivotal battleground. Amidst the fervent atmosphere, voters expressed their desire for change, citing dissatisfaction with the current leadership and embracing the BJP as a promising alternative.

Modi also highlighted the BJP’s commitment to women’s empowerment, citing initiatives to uplift women through self-help groups and acknowledging the significant role of women leaders, including Odisha’s own President Droupadi Murmu.
