The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Ashokan, IMA’s National President, announced plans to write to the Prime Minister, emphasizing the need for his immediate involvement.
Dr. Ashokan stated, “We will write to the Prime Minister. His recent speech on women’s safety shows his concern, making this an opportune moment to seek his intervention.” He also highlighted that the IMA’s demand is a fundamental right—the right to life—and urged the government to act with the political will needed to address this critical issue.
The IMA has seen overwhelming support from doctors across the country, with protests occurring in private, government, and corporate sectors. Ashokan noted, “Doctors are united against this injustice. This issue of women’s safety has gained international attention and has become a movement.”
In response to the incident, the IMA has announced a 24-hour nationwide strike, impacting all modern medical services. On Saturday, doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi held a protest march on campus.
IMA General Secretary Dr. Anil Kumar J Nayak expressed hope that the government will introduce the necessary legal measures. The IMA’s strike reflects the widespread outrage and demand for enhanced safety measures for women in the medical profession and beyond.
