India has ramped up its response to the monkeypox outbreak, now classified as a global emergency. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has urged caution following a high-level review of the situation. During the review, Nadda, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Health, assessed the preparedness to handle potential monkeypox infections.
While India has not reported any cases of monkeypox (M-pox) so far, the meeting decided to implement proactive measures. Health units at airports, seaports, and land borders will be put on high alert. The government plans to establish testing laboratories and prepare systems for detection, isolation, and treatment if cases emerge.
Nadda updated the public via social media after the meeting, emphasizing that the Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the situation. He assured that the government is taking comprehensive measures to prevent the spread of the virus and manage any potential outbreaks.
Globally, monkeypox has spread to 70 countries, with 15 countries reporting new infections. Neighboring Pakistan is among the affected, along with Uganda, Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, and Sweden. Approximately 14,000 cases have been reported, with 542 deaths attributed to the disease. The outbreak also affected the United States and the United Kingdom in 2022.
Monkeypox symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, and bone pain, lasting from 2 to 4 weeks. The disease can cause serious health issues in children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Currently, no direct treatment exists for monkeypox. Recommendations for those infected include maintaining a nutritious diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding scratching the skin.
