The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a new investigation into Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Today, the ED raided four locations associated with Ghosh, including his father’s house and two properties linked to his relatives. Among the targeted sites were the office and residence of a medical equipment supplier.
Ghosh, who served as principal from February 2021 to September 2023, previously faced accusations of financial misconduct at the hospital. Consequently, today’s raids mark a significant escalation in the ED’s investigation.
Furthermore, Ghosh’s tenure ended in September 2023. He briefly returned to his position before resigning amid controversy surrounding the death of a trainee doctor. On August 9, authorities discovered the body of a female doctor in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which caused nationwide outrage. Subsequently, Ghosh resigned two days later but received an appointment as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital from the West Bengal government.
This new appointment, however, sparked protests from medical students and led to questions from the Calcutta High Court, resulting in his transfer. In response to the corruption allegations, Kolkata Police filed a case against Ghosh on August 20. The SIT, established by the Mamata Banerjee government, began the investigation. Ultimately, the CBI took over the probe following a High Court order.
