Bharatpur Police Station’s CCTV Dilemma: Existing Equipment or New Arrivals?

Bharatpur police station has recently drawn national attention due to significant concerns about its security measures. Following the uproar over an incident on the night of the 15th, officials revealed that the police station lacked operational CCTV cameras. However, they discovered old CCTV footage piled up on the premises, raising questions about its origins—whether someone previously used it at Bharatpur police station or brought it in from elsewhere.

Authorities found multiple CCTV cameras lying on the floor, covered in dust and appearing neglected. This discovery sparked public speculation about whether these cameras had been there all along or had been removed without explanation.

The crime branch confirmed that no CCTV operated during the incident on the 15th, yet no one has clarified where the newly found cameras came from.

In response to the situation, officials suspended five individuals, including the IIC of the police station. Deepak Khudayatrai took over as the new SP of Bharatpur police station today. After conducting a two-hour worship ceremony, he addressed the media, stating he prayed for peace of mind. He acknowledged the presence of the old CCTV cameras and mentioned that they relocated them from an older police station to Bharatpur. Khudayatrai assured the public that they would install these cameras in various locations within the police station and notify higher authorities if they needed additional CCTV.

Bharatpur Police Station, inaugurated by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on March 11, must comply with Supreme Court guidelines that mandate immediate installation of CCTV in new police stations. However, the absence of functional CCTV for five months has raised serious questions about oversight and management.

This incident has sparked ongoing discussions about why the former IIC did not ensure the installation of functional CCTV during the past months.
