Supreme Court Criticizes CAQM for Inaction Amid Delhi’s Deteriorating Air Quality

The Supreme Court has criticized the Central Air Quality Management Committee (CAQM) for failing to act as air quality in Delhi deteriorates. With winter approaching, the situation worsens, yet officials have not held anyone accountable for stubble burning in northern states.

During today’s hearing, a two-member bench grilled the CAQM about its actions to maintain air quality standards in the national capital. The court stated, “Every year, we see stubble burning, and CAQM rules remain unenforced. Has the committee even been formed? What actions have you taken under the CAQM Act?” The bench expressed frustration, saying, “You act like a silent observer, doing nothing.”

In response, the Chairman of the Air Quality Panel claimed that three sub-committees meet every three months. The Supreme Court reacted with surprise, saying, “We are astonished that the committee manages its responsibilities by holding only one meeting every three months.”

The court underscored the urgent need for effective strategies to tackle stubble burning at its source. It highlighted that no actions have been taken against those responsible for burning stubble, despite the CAQM having substantial authority to address the issue.

The Supreme Court directed the CAQM to keep records of its meetings and decisions over the next three months. Additionally, the court instructed the Commission to take significant steps to reduce pollution and comply with its directives.
