Bangladesh has recalled its ambassadors from five countries, including India. Alongside India, the Bangladeshi government also brought back its ambassadors from Australia, Belgium, Portugal, and the United States. Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as Prime Minister, tensions have escalated between Bangladesh and India.
Among those recalled is High Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman, along with the United Nations Permanent Representative in New York and ambassadors to Australia, Belgium, and Portugal. These ambassadors were asked to return immediately, despite their impending retirement next month.
Protests led by student unions in Bangladesh prompted significant unrest, leading to Sheikh Hasina’s government collapsing in early August. Following her resignation, she sought refuge in India. In the interim, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has stepped in to lead the government.
In New York last month, the interim government made repeated attempts to arrange a meeting between Yunus and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the United Nations General Assembly. However, Yunus criticized India, and Hasina raised the issue of her extradition, which left the Indian delegation displeased. Consequently, the two leaders could not meet.
