Tigers are set to return to the deserted Satkosia sanctuary, with plans to introduce 12 to 14 tigers as part of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)’s recovery plan. Wildlife PCCF Sushant Nand spearheads this initiative, scheduled for implementation over the next five years.
In 2007, Satkosia hosted 13 to 15 tigers, but their numbers have since dwindled to zero. The recovery plan focuses on reinstating tiger populations, emphasizing the critical role of local community involvement for success. PCCF Nand highlighted that the core area of Satkosia has become vacant, creating opportunities for the voluntary relocation of residents to support the project.
To enhance wildlife protection efforts, the sanctuary has also received 12 state-of-the-art patrolling vans. Equipped with GPS navigation and wildlife rescue capabilities, these vans will play a vital role in safeguarding the animals. Wildlife PCCF Sushant Nand and Additional Principal Secretary of the Forest Department Satyabrat Sahu launched these vans near Bharatpur Sanctuary in Bhubaneswar.
Additionally, patrolling lanes have been established at Balukhand Sanctuary and Kapilas Sanctuary to improve operational efficiency. The introduction of these resources aims to strengthen the sanctuary’s wildlife conservation and monitoring efforts.
