Jagan Mohan Reddy Claims Illegal Asset Transfer by Sister Sharmila in Family Dispute

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief of the Yuvajan Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), has accused his sister YS Sharmila, the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress, of engaging in a legal battle over ancestral property. The conflict centers on allegations that Sharmila illegally transferred shares in Saraswati Power and Industries, owned by Jagan and his wife, Bharti, into her name and their mother Vijayamma’s name.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) heard Jagan’s petition last month, with the next hearing scheduled for November. In his petition, Jagan claimed that he signed an agreement with Sharmila to gift his and his wife’s shares to her. However, pending legal cases concerning the properties, including confiscation by authorities, prompted him to reconsider the transfer.

In a letter to Sharmila, Jagan expressed that transferring the shares without fulfilling legal obligations and court approval would be inappropriate. He acknowledged the deteriorating relationship between them, stating, “It is no longer a secret.” He formally informed her of his intention to cancel the original agreement.

Jagan also noted that the property acquired by their father, former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy, has been divided among family members. Despite wanting to transfer the shares—valued at around Rs. 200 crore—he decided to halt the process after reflecting on the family dynamics and legal implications.

The siblings’ relationship has soured since Sharmila left the YSR Congress party in July 2021, creating political tensions between them. As the situation escalates, the family feud highlights the complexities of legacy and personal relationships within the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh.
