Odissi Kendra, Delhi, one of the city’s premier performing arts institutions, recently marked its 47th anniversary with a grand celebration at Alliance Française de Delhi, Lodhi Estate. The event was a visual feast, decorated in a style befitting the occasion, and showcased an impressive array of performances by artists of various age groups. From children to teens to seasoned performers, around 19 talented dancers of Odissi Kendra presented a range of captivating Odissi dance pieces, brilliantly choreographed under the expert guidance of Programme Director Guru Sushree Kalyani Behera.

Odissi Kendra was founded in 1977 by the internationally renowned Odissi Guru, the late Shri Hare Krishna Behera, who brought Odissi dance to the national stage in the early 1960s. The institution has since nurtured several celebrated dancers who have gained international acclaim, including Dr. Sonal Mansingh, Madhavi Mudgal, Yamini Krishnamurthy, and Kavita Dwibedi, among others. Shri Behera’s wife, Smt. Padmawati Behera, now serves as the President of Odissi Kendra, continuing his legacy.

Tabla Maestro Pandit Vijay Shankar Mishra also extended his best wishes to the Kendra’s teachers and students.

The evening featured a wide range of captivating performances, beginning with the novice dancers’ enchanting rendition of “Namaskriya” and “Guru Shlokas.” The audience was spellbound as the young artists displayed their artistry. The performances continued with “Mangalacharan” (Ganesha Stuti), “Battu Nritta,” “Mohana Pallavi,” and an emotive solo “Kahin Gale Murali Phunka” by senior disciple Teesta Guha Ganguly, whose facial expressions and dance movements left the audience mesmerized.

Other performances included the soulful Odia Bhajan “Aahe Nila Saila,” “Basant Pallavi,” “Dasavataar,” and “Moksha,” all of which captivated the audience and earned resounding applause. The program was a massive success, with culture critics and art lovers showering praises on the dancers and Guru Sushree Kalyani Behera for their exceptional presentation.

The senior artists who participated included Teesta Guha Ganguly, Babita Parida, Ramashri Mukherjee, and others, while the junior group featured Aadya Sharma, Advika Rawat, Shreya Chauhan, and more.
