Sukhbir Singh Badal has resigned as the chairman of the Shiromani Akali Party, submitting his resignation letter to the party’s executive committee. Daljit Singh Cheema, the former education minister of Punjab and senior Akali Dal leader, shared the news through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Cheema confirmed that Sukhbir Singh Badal stepped down to make way for the election of a new party president. In his resignation, Badal expressed his gratitude to party leaders and workers for their unwavering support during his tenure and for placing their trust in his leadership.
Sukhbir Singh Badal has led the Shiromani Akali Party since 2008, serving as president for 16 years and two months. Prior to him, his father, Prakash Singh Badal, held the position. Badal chose to resign just before the by-elections scheduled for November 20, where four Punjab assembly seats will go to the polls. The resignation raises questions about who will succeed him as the new party chief.
