Army Major’s Torture Sparks Outcry; Criminal Case Filed Against Police Officers

The torture case involving a Major and his accomplice at the Bharatpur police station has sparked outrage across the state, igniting a political scandal. Opposition leader Naveen Patnaik condemned the incident, calling it unfortunate.

Naveen described the police’s treatment of Army Major Gurusul Singh and his companion as reprehensible, demanding a judicial investigation and strict action against those responsible.

Major Gurusul Singh, an officer in the 22nd Sikh Regiment, was traveling from Patiya with his accomplice late Saturday night when they encountered a group of road romeos in two cars who verbally abused them. They went to the Bharatpur police station to file a complaint.

An argument ensued between the police and the army officers, leading to the detention of Gurusul overnight. The Major alleged that police officers verbally abused and physically assaulted his accomplice. He also claimed that the IIC of Bharatpur police station issued threats.

Later, police arrested the Major’s accomplice and sent him to Jharpada Jail, where he required treatment at Bhubaneswar AIIMS due to severe injuries inflicted by the police.

Initially, IIC Dinakrishna Mishra and four other police officers faced suspension for their role in the abuse of Major Gurusul Singh and his accomplice. Today, a criminal case has been filed against them, following a written complaint from the Major. The crime branch has registered the case.

Additionally, DGP YB Khurania has ordered an immediate investigation to identify and arrest the road romeos involved in the incident.
