In his Independence Day address, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grave concerns about the state’s future, highlighting significant demographic changes. Speaking during the flag hoisting ceremony, Sarma warned that the balance between Hindus and Muslims in Assam is rapidly shifting, leading to a sense of insecurity among the state’s native population.
Sarma noted that the Hindu population in Assam has decreased from 60-65 percent to approximately 50 percent. He pointed out that this shift has caused native communities to feel increasingly vulnerable, particularly in 12-13 districts where they are now in the minority.
Addressing the public, Sarma urged all communities to adhere to family planning guidelines and to be mindful of practices such as polygamy. He emphasized the need for a strong state government to safeguard the interests of the native population and counteract the perceived threats stemming from these demographic changes.
“While I may not be the light of the sun, I will stand like a candle of hope until my last breath to protect the interests of the natives,” Sarma declared. His speech reflects ongoing concerns about the state’s demographic dynamics and their potential impact on social stability.
