Bangladesh Faces Controversy Over National Anthem

Bangladesh is dealing with a new issue after recent violence. Abdullahil Aman Azmi, son of former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ghulam Azam, has called for changes to the national anthem, “Amar Sonar Bangla,” and the constitution.

Azmi believes the current anthem, written by Rabindranath Tagore, does not fit an independent Bangladesh. He argues that India imposed it in 1971 and suggests creating a new commission to choose a new anthem.

Abul Faiz Muhammad Khaled Hossain, the religious affairs adviser for Bangladesh’s interim government, responded by saying there are no plans to change the anthem. Hossain stated that the interim government aims to avoid controversy and focus on unity. He also assured that the government will take action against those who attack the Hindu community, following existing laws.

The national anthem debate adds to ongoing tensions in Bangladesh, highlighting the country’s complex social and political issues.
