Bangladesh Orders Ban on Hindu Bhajans During Azan

The safety of minorities in Bangladesh is drawing global concern following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country. Despite claims by the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus that they are taking measures to protect minorities, recent developments suggest otherwise. The interim government, under Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retired) Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, has issued a controversial decree restricting Hindu worship practices.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, Hindus in Bangladesh are now prohibited from worshiping during the Azan and from using loudspeakers for bhajans and other religious activities during Azan and Namaz times. This decree, which the interim government has labeled a measure to ensure public order, has faced significant criticism.

The interim administration has also requested Hindu communities to halt Durga Puja-related activities that involve music, including the use of loudspeakers and musical instruments. Puja committees have reportedly agreed to comply with these restrictions.

Chowdhury announced that this year will see the construction of 32,666 Puja Mandaps across the country, including 157 in Dhaka South City and 88 in Dhaka North City Corporation. The recent political shift has led to increased violence against Hindus, with numerous attacks reported since Sheikh Hasina’s departure on August 5.

In response to the violence, the Bangladesh government has also ordered the deployment of madrasa students to guard Hindu temples during Durga Puja. Bangladesh Religious Affairs Advisor Dr. AFM Khalid Hussain recently visited the Premtali Gaurang Bari Kali Temple in Rajshahi district, highlighting the heightened security measures.

The ongoing violence and restrictive measures have raised serious concerns about the safety and rights of minority communities in Bangladesh.
