Seven “Road Romeo,” have been arrested for assaulting an army major and his constable on a road in the capital. They received bail within four hours of their arrest. The incident occurred on the night of the 15th, leading to significant unrest.
In response, various political parties and social organizations have taken to the streets, demanding action against the accused. However, the state government has only suspended five police personnel, including the IIC.
The Indian Army has sent a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court, requesting an independent investigation into the incident. Additionally, the police have contacted the DG, demanding decisive action against the accused. The National Commission for Women has also asked for a report from the DG of Police.
Conversely, the Odisha Police Officers Association has expressed support for the five suspended officers. Hundreds of police officers, including senior ACPs and inspectors from the Commissionerate Police, protested yesterday in Bhubaneswar against the actions of their police chief (Police DG). The roles of Bhubaneswar DCP Prathik Singh and Police Commissioner Sanjib Panda have come under scrutiny for defending the involved officers.
Political parties, including Congress and BJD, have condemned the police’s actions towards the army officer and his constable, demanding a judicial investigation.
As the investigation continues, the crime branch is interrogating the five suspended officers. The Cyber Cell of the Crime Branch is also analyzing communication records related to the mastermind and his associates from the 120th Battalion.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has assured the public that the government will take strict action against the culprits. However, with the incident lingering for seven days, many are closely watching to see what further actions the government will take.
