Government Revises Beach Bar Policy After Protests in Puri

The Odisha government has adjusted its policy on beach bars and liquor booths at Puri Beach following widespread protests. While the decision to open liquor booths still stands, new restrictions now apply. Liquor kiosks will not operate within Puri Municipality or within a 5 km radius of sites deemed socio-religious-cultural by the tourism department. The unemployment department issued a notification outlining these changes.

State Abkari and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan assured that the government will protect the sanctity of Puri Beach. The revised policy permits BeachSax, a system for beach bars, to open only in specific locations similar to those used for the Eco Retreat. The restrictions aim to prevent any impact on nearby religious institutions and traditions.

Unemployment Commissioner Narsingh Bhod clarified that the new policy offers opportunities for BeachSax but requires careful consideration to avoid disturbing religious sentiments. Previously, the BeachSax system aimed to enhance tourism, with only OTDCs holding licenses. Despite this, Puri Beach had not received any licenses, and the updated notification reaffirms the commitment to maintain the area’s religious significance.

The state government has faced significant criticism from Shankaracharya and other intellectuals regarding the introduction of BeachSax in Puri. Critics argue that this move threatens the sacredness of the beach, which holds deep religious and cultural significance. The backlash underscores the tension between modern tourism developments and the preservation of cultural and religious heritage.
