Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to Pakistan, where he will attend the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting today. During this meeting, representatives from SCO member states will discuss various issues, focusing on enhancing economic, trade, socio-cultural, and humanitarian cooperation.
Prior to this, Jaishankar met with the Prime Minister of Mongolia and received a warm welcome at Islamabad airport yesterday. He later dined with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alongside leaders and representatives from various member states.
This marks the first visit by an Indian foreign minister to Pakistan in nine years, following the trip of then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in 2015. Despite this diplomatic engagement, Jaishankar has consistently criticized Pakistan on the global stage regarding India-Pakistan tensions and issues of terrorism infiltration. His visit remains significant, as many will be keen to hear his remarks on the root causes of terrorism emanating from Pakistan.
