Jalka and Baitarani Rivers Rise, Flood Threatens Balasore

Heavy rainfall from a low-pressure system has swollen the Jalka and Baitarani rivers, pushing their levels above the danger mark and threatening floods in riverside communities.

In Basta block’s Mathani area, Balasore district, where the danger mark is 6.00 meters, the water level climbed to 10.22 meters by 6 AM. Heavy rain in the upper Jalka River in Mayurbhanj district caused the surge. Weak riverbanks in several areas have left residents fearing floods.

Persistent heavy rain has lashed Rasgobindpur, Morada, Shulwanpada, and Chitdar in Mayurbhanj district, pushing up water levels in the Jalka river basin. Continued rainfall could trigger floods, threatening paddy crops and farmland in Basta and Sadar blocks.

Likewise, floodwaters have breached the danger mark in Rajghat and Achupada, as the rains persist.

The low-pressure system continues to pour rain across the state, raising river levels and heightening the flood threat.
