Justice Sanjeev Khanna will step into the role of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, becoming the 51st Chief Justice after Justice DY Chandrachud retires.
Justice Chandrachud has recommended Justice Khanna’s appointment in a letter to the Central Government. He will retire on November 10, and Justice Khanna will take over on November 11, serving a six-month term until May 13 next year.
Justice Khanna started his legal career in 1983 after registering with the Delhi Bar Council, initially practicing at the Hazari Complex District Court. He then practiced in various High Courts and served as an Assistant Public Prosecutor in the Delhi High Court, later taking on the role of amicus curiae.
In 2005, Justice Khanna assumed the position of Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court, and in 2006, he secured confirmation as a permanent judge. He joined the Supreme Court as a judge in 2019 and is now ready to lead the highest court in the country as Chief Justice.
