India’s eminent entrepreneur Ratan Tata has passed away, marking an irreparable loss for the Indian industry. He breathed his last at Bridge Candy Hospital in Mumbai late Wednesday night. In the wake of his death, many are questioning who will succeed him, as Ratan Tata was unmarried and had no children.
Tata leaves behind a significant fortune of ₹3,800 crore, prompting speculation about who will inherit his wealth and assets. Currently, his half-brother Noel Tata emerges as the leading candidate for succession. Noel, the son of Ratan Tata’s father Naval Tata and his second wife, Simone, stands as a prominent family figure.
Noel Tata has three children—Maya, Neville, and Leah—who are also potential heirs. All three actively contribute to the Tata Group: Maya, 34, plays key roles in Tata Opportunities and Tata Digital, and she helped launch the Tata New App. Neville, 32, leads the major hypermarket chain Star Bazaar under Trent Limited, while 39-year-old Leah oversees the hospitality sector, managing the Taj Hotel Resort and Palace and the Indian Hotel Company.
As the Tata Group and the nation mourn the loss of Ratan Tata, many will closely watch the future of his legacy.
