Mayurbhanj District Faces Salary Freezes as Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme Progress Stalls

Mayurbhanj district lags in implementing the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme. Despite high revenue generation, it ranks low on the scheme’s progress list. In response to this report, District Magistrate Hemkant Sai took swift action, issuing a strict directive to freeze the salaries of 843 government officials immediately.

The district’s completion rate for the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme stands at 65%, well below the target, leaving thousands of beneficiaries without homes. This delay, attributed to the negligence and inefficiency of field officers involved in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, has now led to salary freezes. The district will withhold payments for J.E., assistant engineers, acquisition engineers, PIOs, audio operators, and chief computer operators until they meet the scheme’s targets.

Last fiscal year, authorities allocated over 1.5 lakh houses to Mayurbhanj district under the scheme. However, as 65% of the target remains unmet, the issue has sparked widespread discussion across the district. New District Magistrate Hemkant Sai, visibly dissatisfied with the project’s progress, aims to enforce accountability among officials to meet the housing needs of local citizens.
