Getting an Aadhaar card in Assam is about to change. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma announced that people will need to provide their NRC number to get an Aadhaar card. This new rule aims to prevent illegal entry into the state.
Starting October 1, applicants must give their NRC application receipt number to receive their Aadhaar card. This rule comes because the number of Aadhaar applications is higher than the state’s population in some areas.
In four districts, Barpeta, Dhubri, Morigaon, and Nagaon—the number of Aadhaar applications exceeds the estimated population. To address this, the government will only issue Aadhaar cards to those with NRC numbers. This measure is intended to stop unauthorized individuals from getting citizenship.
Chief Minister Sharma explained that it will now be harder to get an Aadhaar card in Assam. However, 9.55 lakh people whose biometrics were collected during the NRC process will still get their cards without needing an NRC number.
Tea garden workers will not be affected by this new process due to issues with biometric machines in these areas, which have delayed their Aadhaar card issuance.
