New Tech to Stop or Boost Rain Gets Govt Approval

Indian meteorologists have created a new technology that controls rain based on need. This means they can stop excessive rain or produce rain during dry spells. The technology also prevents hail and lightning.

The Union Cabinet has already approved the project, named ‘Mission Mausam’. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Geology, stated that the government has sanctioned Rs. 2,000 crore for this mission.

“We are ready for initial tests to control and increase artificial rainfall. We will conduct lab simulations (cloud chamber) within a year and a half, and full-scale artificial weather modification will take five years,” Ravichandran explained. Scientists working on ‘Mission Mausam’ aim to improve the accuracy of weather forecasting, focusing on low and moderate rainfall predictions.

The project will also introduce ‘Mausam GPT,’ a ChatGPT-like app developed in collaboration with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other scientific institutes. The app will provide weather forecasts for the next five years in both text and audio formats.

Countries like the United States, Canada, China, Russia, and Australia are already using cloud seeding to modify rainfall. India plans to implement this technology across the country within five years.
