In a comprehensive 90-minute Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted five key priorities for his government and the nation. His speech addressed a range of topics, including crimes against women, governance reforms, and international relations.
Prime Minister Modi expressed deep concern over recent crimes against women, particularly highlighting the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. He urged state governments to take decisive and immediate action against such perpetrators. “We need to stop the atrocities on our women,” Modi said, emphasizing the need for swift justice and media coverage to act as a deterrent.
Modi reaffirmed his support for the BJP’s promises of a uniform civil code and ‘One Nation, One Election’. He called for the implementation of a “Secular Civil Code” to replace the existing “communal civil code.” These proposals were key points in the BJP’s manifesto.
The Prime Minister voiced his concern for the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh, urging for the protection of minorities and the rule of law. “We will continue to support development in Bangladesh,” Modi said, while expressing hope that attacks on minorities would cease.
Modi took a firm stance against corruption, criticizing those who promote or praise corrupt practices. “We will continue to have zero tolerance on corruption,” he declared, underscoring his government’s commitment to eradicating corrupt practices.
Highlighting his governance model, Modi reflected on India’s transformation from a victim of terrorism to a confident nation capable of conducting surgical and air strikes. He spoke about the ongoing efforts towards a ‘Developed India-2047,’ stressing the importance of engaging with the public and ensuring that government initiatives reach the last beneficiary. Modi also announced plans for India to host the Olympics in 2036 and to involve one lakh youth without political family backgrounds in the political system. Modi emphasized India’s resilience in the face of global challenges and urged nations to understand India’s values and principles.
