Police Clash with Protesters in Sambhal Over Jama Masjid Survey

There was significant unrest during the survey in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal when locals pelted the police with stones. The survey, conducted at the Jama Masjid, sparked violent protests from the people.

Following a court order, the survey team arrived at 6 a.m. today to carry out a second inspection of the Jama Masjid. The authorities deployed the District Magistrate (DM), Superintendent of Police (SP), Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Circle Officer (CO), and personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Response Force (RRF) to ensure security. However, protesters suddenly threw stones at the police team stationed outside the mosque. The police responded by using tear gas and lathi-charging some individuals.

The survey team entered the Jama Masjid at 7:30 a.m. and initially, the situation seemed calm. However, within an hour, a crowd gathered outside the mosque, protesting the survey. The confrontation escalated into a standoff between the police and the demonstrators, increasing the tension in the area.

On November 19, the Hindu side filed a petition in the Civil Senior Division Chandausi Court, claiming that the Shahi Jama Masjid of Sambhal was originally the shrine of Sri Harihar and had been converted into a mosque during Babur’s rule in 1529. The court then ordered a survey of the mosque and instructed the report to be submitted by November 29. Following this, the survey team visited the site for the first time on Tuesday, and today, the advocate commissioner team conducted a second survey.
